Shake Stop Challenge

Physically shake your phone a set number of times to dismiss the alarm.

Overview

The Shake Stop Challenge is designed to bridge the gap between mental challenges (like Math) and full physical displacement (like QR or Walk). It requires you to vigorously shake your device a specific number of times before the alarm will yield.

This forceful, repeated physical action naturally spikes your heart rate and rapidly dissipates the heavy grogginess of sleep inertia, ensuring you don't accidentally knock your phone off the nightstand and fall back asleep.

Capabilities

  • Configurable Shake Count: Utilize a precise slider to demand a specific number of aggressive shakes, ranging from a quick 4 to an exhausting 16 consecutive movements.
  • Advanced Accelerometer Tracking: ReAlarm taps directly into your device's native hardware accelerometer to detect distinct, deliberate shaking motions, filtering out weak or accidental bumps.
  • Real-Time Progress UI: The challenge features a distraction-free, locked-down screen with a prominent green progress bar and a live counter (e.g., '8/12 shakes') so you know exactly how close you are to silencing the alarm.
  • Instant Reset Mechanics: If you stop shaking prematurely and attempt to close the app, the challenge state persists, ensuring you complete the entire set.

How to Setup

  1. In the Edit Alarm menu, scroll to the 'Alarm Stop Challenges' section and select the 'Shake' icon.
  2. Drag the dark green slider to set your required 'Number of shakes' (4, 8, 12, or 16).
  3. Tap 'Preview' to test the accelerometer sensitivity.
  4. Tap 'Apply' to save the physical challenge to the current alarm.

Use Cases

Dorm Room Silence: When you need to quickly silence your alarm without turning on the lights or shouting a voice password, vigorous shaking is the fastest physical method to turn off the sound before waking your roommate.

Adrenaline Boosters: Setting the count to 16 requires a sustained 10-15 seconds of rapid arm movement, spiking your blood pressure just enough to break an intensely deep REM cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will gentle rocking trigger the shake counter?
No. ReAlarm's hardware integration is specifically calibrated to require distinct, abrupt changes in acceleration. A slow, gentle rocking motion will not register as a valid shake.
Can I throw my phone on the bed to cheat?
While impact does register acceleration, you would have to repeatedly throw and catch the device 16 times in a row, which requires far more effort and wakefulness than simply shaking it in your hand!
What happens if I accidentally close the screen during exactly 8 shakes?
The alarm service remains highly persistent in the background and will aggressively restart the challenge. The number of shakes required will reset, forcing you to start over.
